The Writing Area

This is where the serious, do not disturb, please dear god let me get to the end of this chapter before 2am because I need to sleep before I go to work writing happens.

From this angle (which involved standing on the bed) there are five Nightcrawler action figures, three Batmans, two Spidermans, a pink glass of water, a magnificent split keyboard and my ode to Canada that conceals an ugly door.

I have a wonderful live-in editor too. Gloomy Bear thinks the word 'wetted' is pretentious and advises me to change it to 'soaked'.

This thoroughly fingerprint-smeared device is my pride, my joy, my usually much cleaner writing area. We enjoy riding trains, eating in restaurants, sneaking a few paragraphs when it's slow at work and long walks on the beach.

  1. Dude. That's got to be the coolest writing spot I've seen! Mine's much more lo-fi. But I'm digging the minimalist feel of yours. Nice!

  2. The sheer geekery of your area is turning me on a little. Awesome!

  3. I like the wall mount desk. Good idea!

  4. It's the only kind that would fit. Also, the only reason the desk isn't covered in little notebooks and scraps of paper... I have to put it away to get to the bed.

  5. I love the mounted desk! That's so cool : )
And that is the disadvantage of black laptops, I have discovered, too--they show every fingerprint. But, on the plus side, there's lots of evidence that the laptop is yours!

  6. But... but... it isn't a laptop. It is my not so secret early adapter joy/shame.

    'Tis an ipad.

  7. What a cool writing area. Love all the action figures. I think I need some for my desk.

  8. Nightcrawlers, Batmans, a model of Serenity and a poster! I think I just died from the geeky coolness of it all! (I used to have a tiny Batman, once upon a time, when I also had a desk. Wonder where he's gone.)

I love that your writing desk folds away. I love the whole space! And Gloomy. Sounds like a good editor, though I like the word "wetted". It's evocative. *nods pretentiously*

  9. Oh, you win at life for recognizing the poster and the tiny model ship! It's actually Serenity disguised as a Reaver ship... and it doubles as a tree ornament.

  10. First, I'm glad to know others creepily close relationships with their laptops. Secondly, I've noticed if you don't have a cat, you must have a Canadian Flag to be a part of the Secret Writer's Club. At least I'm not allergic to Canada.

  11. Is that a split keyboard saddling the laptop?

Also pure geek envy from me to you at your new toy & the serenity poster. Those look like the magical ingredients for a wonderful writing moment.

  12. It IS a split keyboard. It's the most ergonomic one I could afford and it is my very best toy.

  13. my mistake! I didn't look very carefully at the picture and assumed that you'd closed the laptop in the picture above. No insult intended!

also, you have an iPad?? I am jealous.

  14. Ah, well, I was going to say iPad in the post but my friends keep telling me not to show off my toy.

It is absolutely great for one handed typing. I'm not sure how people who use both hands manage it though. Tiny keyboard.

  15. I was going to ask what you thought of typing on the iPad, but then I realized I need to pay more attention.

Lovely corner! Makes me miss my broken Canada pencil cup.

  16. Go Serenity! Go geekiness! Go Canada!

I'm also impressed at your portability. When I was in junior high and high school I used to carry a notebook with my draft on it and work in class, after I'd finished the assignments. Now that I'm in my thirties, I find I need more control over my environment. Especially noise. Ah, for the lost focus of my youth!

  17. Wow! Swap the bedroom for a living room, the desk for a stuffed chair with an ottoman, the ipad for a laptop, the action figures for Lego Star Wars guys, the Serenity poster for the Demotivators "Madness" poster (Madness does not always howl. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "Hey, is there room in your head for one more?"), and Gloomy Bear Editor for three grandkids and Mario Brothers for Wii...and we could be working in the same space!!! Spooky...
